Basic Education

There are 43 schools offering Basic Education under the Department of Education. In addition, there is a state-maintained school Oulun normaalikoulu, and privately owned Svenska Privatskolan i Uleåborg and Oulun steinerkoulu.

Schools generally give priority for admission for students from their own catchment areas. Students may also apply to schools outside their own school’s catchment area.

Students of grades 1 and 2 are offered morning and afternoon care, coordinated by Oulu Youth Work Centre (Nuorisoasiainkeskus, tel. (08) 558 48204). After-school activities are also organised by schools mainly free of charge.

In City of Oulu schools, there are special classes for Visual Art, Music and Physical Education. These classes start in grades 3 and 7, and applications are sent to these classes in the spring term of grade 2 and grade 6 respectively. Under the Deparment of Education is also Oulu International School offering tuition in English for those grade 1-9 students whose English skills are sufficient to learn through English. Students’ linguistic skills are tested upon enrolment.

Additional Basic Education (grade 10) is offered by Pohjankartano School.
